Flexible Event Space in Champaign, IL

More Than 10,000 Square Feet of Possibility

The Venue CU offers a collection of distinct spaces under one historic roof in downtown Champaign. The Varsity Ballroom seats up to 250 for dinner or accommodates 400 in auditorium-style arrangements, featuring original 1906 tin ceilings and a professional-grade Pro Audio sound system. The Main Street Lounge holds up to 100 guests around a restored 1930s bar and recreations of the original 1898 hand-laid tiles. A dedicated Bridal Suite and Groom's Room round out the on-site experience, giving wedding parties a comfortable, private base for the entire day. And when the celebration is over, The Flats offer six luxury loft-style accommodations steps from the venue, so your guests never have to go far.

Family-Owned and Operated

Backed by 55+ Years of Industry Experience

The Venue CU is owned and operated by a team that has spent decades working in the event and wedding industry. Co-owner Greg Bugbee brings 40 years of experience in the wedding sector, while Dan and Miranda Church contribute roughly 16 to 17 years of hands-on operational expertise. Together, this team has built a venue that prioritizes personal guidance over rigid corporate protocols. You will work directly with people who are genuinely invested in making your event memorable, not a front-desk coordinator reading from a script.

Common Questions About The Venue CU

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many guests can The Venue CU accommodate for a wedding or large event?

The Varsity Ballroom seats approximately 250 guests for a dinner-style reception and can hold up to 400 in an auditorium-style arrangement. The Main Street Lounge is a separate, more intimate space that accommodates up to 100 guests and works well for cocktail hours or smaller gatherings. Together, the two spaces give you flexibility to configure the venue based on your guest count and the flow of your event.
  • Do I have to use the venue's preferred caterers and vendors?

No. The Venue CU provides a curated list of trusted vendors for your convenience, but you are welcome to work with the caterers, florists, photographers, and other event professionals of your choice. The only requirement is that any outside caterer must hold current Health Department certification to use the venue's licensed warming kitchen. This approach gives you the flexibility to personalize your event while still benefiting from a network of experienced vendors who are familiar with the venue.

  • Are there accommodations on-site for wedding parties or out-of-town guests?

Yes. The Flats at The Venue CU offer six luxury loft-style rental units located steps from the event spaces. The units are configured as four 2-bedroom and two 1-bedroom rentals and are individually named: the Champagne Suite, Urban Vale, High Dive, Varsity Theater, Train Yard, and Doctor's Quarters. They are bookable through Lodgify and are particularly popular with wedding parties and out-of-town guests who want to stay close to the celebration without coordinating hotel blocks or shuttles.
  • What makes this venue different from other event spaces in Central Illinois?

Several things set The Venue CU apart. The building is listed on the National Historic Landmark Registry and features original 1898 hand-laid tile floors and 1906 tin ceilings restored in collaboration with state and federal historians. The ownership team brings over 55 years of combined industry experience to every event. The venue uses a flexible vendor policy rather than mandatory all-inclusive packages. And the in-house Pro Audio sound system is a professional-grade installation, not a basic rental setup. Few spaces in Central Illinois combine historic character, technical infrastructure, and personal service at this level.
  • Is The Venue CU a dog-friendly event space?

Yes. The Venue CU accommodates dogs as part of your event. Couples who want their pets involved in the ceremony, including as ring bearers, are welcome to do so. This policy reflects the venue's commitment to honoring what matters most to each client rather than applying a one-size-fits-all set of rules.
  • Is parking available near the venue?

The Venue CU is located in the east end of downtown Champaign, Illinois. Adjacent parking is available, and the venue is in close proximity to the Hyatt hotel and downtown dining and entertainment, making it a convenient destination for guests traveling from out of town. The central downtown location is also a key advantage for nonprofit events and corporate gatherings that benefit from walkable access to other Champaign amenities.
  • How does the booking process work, and is pricing listed publicly?

The Venue CU uses an inquiry-first booking model. The primary starting point is to check your date, which opens a personalized conversation with the team. Specific pricing for wedding packages, which range from Silver to Diamond tiers, is not listed publicly. This approach allows the team to match each client with the right package based on their specific event needs rather than presenting a fixed price list.
  • What types of events does The Venue CU host beyond weddings?

In addition to weddings, The Venue CU regularly hosts corporate events including award galas, team meetings, and holiday parties. The venue also accommodates private parties such as bridal showers, milestone birthdays, reunions, and Celebrations of Life. Nonprofit organizations use the space for downtown fundraisers and community gatherings. The venue has also hosted theater company collaborations and community-facing public events as part of its growing role as a downtown Champaign destination.
